Recently doctors performed tests on indigo naturalis, a plant based powder used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, to prove this natural supplement is effective and safe in treating common psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease which impacts around 2 to 3% of Western civilization. Currently no cure exits. The name comes from the Greek work psora which means to itch. In most cases, skin condition first appears on individuals between 15 to 25 years. Of the population impacted by psoriasis 67% of the cases are considered mild, 25% moderate, and 8% severe. In severe psoriasis cases over 10% of the body is impacted by the skin condition. The most common form of psoriasis is Plaque psoriasis and impacts 80% to 90% of all sufferers. Plaque psoriasis appears as inflamed raised areas of inflamed skin which is covered with silvery white scaly skin.

Psoriasis affects most people by discomfort or embarrassment and in some cases various disabilities. This ailment is itchy and painful and can show up anywhere on the body. This includes hands or feet which can interrupt basis functions impacting the ability to work ceritan types of jobs, sports, or caring for ones self or others. Psoriasis can also show up on the face or scalp, which can impact social interaction due to embarrassment. This social aspect of psoriasis can lead to depression, poor self image, fear of public rejection, or psychosexual concerns.

Hopefully with the new studies of indigo naturalis some of the psoriasis can be relieved. The study conducted in Chang Gung University in Taiwan by Dr. Yin-Ku Lin of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital consisted of 42 psoriasis patients for 12 weeks. This random trial had participants apply the indigo naturalis ointment to a psoriatic plaque on one side of the body and a placebo ointment on a psoriatic plaque on the opposite side of the body.

As a result, the doctors observed an 81% psoriasis improvement in areas where the indigo naturalis ointment was administered, compared to a 26% improvement on areas treated with the placebo ointment. More importantly, 34 of the 42 patients were completely or almost completely cleared of psoriasis. None of the 42 patients suffered serious adverse side effects.

As a final conclusion the researchers stated, “In conclusion, we present a randomized controlled trial showing the use of topical indigo naturalis ointment for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis to be both safe and effective.” These findings were reported in the November 2008 Issue of Archives of Dermatology.

What is indigo naturalis? It is a traditional chinese medicine derived from the plant Strobilanthes formosanus Moore. Natural Indigo is the dried powder or mass prepared from the leaf or the stem and leaf of Baphicacanthus cusia (Ness) Bremek. (Fam. Acanthaceae),polygonum thinctorium Ait. (Fam. polygonaceae) or Isatis indigotica Fort. (Fam. Cruciferae). Indigo Naturalis is also referred to as Natural Indigo or Qing Dai.

In the advent now of new technology, and the the evolving needs of physicians, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals, different kind of medicines have been made to cure various deceases. There are a lot of medicines to cure deceases, but one thing remains the same, natural medicine can still be the best cure for some known ailments. Herbal medicine, if prepared correctly can treat almost any condition that patients might take to their doctor. But also, people should take in mind that qualified herbalists know when a condition is best seen by a doctor or another therapist. Natural medicine may be deemed best for some ailments and patients and one example is the medicine derived from indigo naturalis.

In Chinese literature, it is said that indigo naturalis exhibits potential antipsoriatic effects in systemic therapy. The plant’s claimed effect is that it remove toxic heat, to reduce heat in blood , and helps relieve convulsions. Natural Indigo has effects on liver, lung and the stomach. This natural herb often clears fever, detoxifies blood, cool blood and removes ecchymoses. It is said that the Indigo Naturalis has similar affects as the natural herb, Isatis leaf. The flavor of Natural indigo is salty and it is cold in nature. The normal dosages given to patients that needs the medicine Indigo naturalis ranges from 1.5 grams to 3 grams. The herb has the effects of naturally reducing fever, and for detoxifying. Also, it is found that this plant can help in reducing mild convulsions and give relief in muscle spasms.

According to a study, the plant indigo naturalis may be effective in treating psoriasis. The study, published in the Archive of Dermatology, looked at 42 patients suffering from psoriasis for the past two years. “Researchers found that indigo naturalis in ointment form was safe and effective in treating psoriasis”, Reuters reports. What is then a psoriasis? According to the wikipedia, “Psoriasis (pronounced /səˈraɪəsɪs/) is a non-contagious disorder which affects the skin and joints. It commonly causes red scaly patches to appear on the skin. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production. Skin rapidly accumulates at these sites and takes on a silvery-white appearance. Plaques frequently occur on the skin of the elbows and knees, but can affect any area including the scalp and genitals. In contrast to eczema, psoriasis is more likely to be found on the extensor aspect of the joint.” In the said study, patients showed dramatic improvement after 12 weeks of treatment.

The topical indigo naturalis ointment treatment significantly reduced scaling and erythema without adverse events in patients with plaque-type psoriasis, according to the results of a randomized controlled trial reported in the November issue of the Archives of Dermatology. “Indigo naturalis ointment treatment has neither adverse effects, such as those found with corticosteroid treatment, nor other toxic effects based on our past 5 years of clinical observation” the study authors concluded. “Furthermore, it costs much less in comparison with other topical agents.” They said. It is therefore a very big help that the effects of the natural herb indigo naturalis is to prevent and cure the ailment psoriasis. It can be an alternative and complementary therapy to those people who have psoriasis. Not only will it help relieve the pain and discomfort, it will also give the person his confidence back by being cured of this disease.
